The application for the Opportunity Scholarship Program and the application for a private school are separate processes. Traditional public schools are open admissions schools that follow an educational curriculum decided by the local education school board. Magnet schools and their programs are theme-based to promote students' interests, abilities, and talents. Students apply for placement in a magnet program. Magnet schools are noted by an "M".
Public charter schools are independent public schools with greater operational and educational freedom than traditional public schools. However, public charter schools participate in the same state testing and accountability program as traditional public schools. Unlike traditional public schools, public charter schools can be closed if they fail to meet academic or operational standards.
Nonpublic schools, or private schools, are those outside the traditional public school system. These schools are either affiliated with a religious denomination or are based on a particular educational philosophy, have a special needs focus for disabled students, or offer specific subject matter specialty, such as the arts or science and technology.
